How does blocking images help me fight junk mail (spam)?

Many junk mail senders or spammers send email with external (web-based) images.
External images are downloaded from the spammer's server when the email is opened and are used as an indication that your email address is valid and active.

Using the 'Block External Images' feature in your mail client, external images are not downloaded into your computer unless you specifically request them.
This increases the chance of fooling spammers into thinking that your email address is invalid, causing them to remove your address from their mailing list.

In other words, blocking external images means that there is a good chance that you will not receive any more junk mail from that specific spammer.
